Brittanica Encyclopedia, 11th Edition, Vol. 3, page 365, says, "Baptism was changed from the name of Jesus to the words: Father, Son and Holy Ghost in the 2nd Century."
Canney Encyclopedia of Religion, page 53, says, "The early Church baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus until the second century."
The Catholic Encyclopedia, II, page 263, says, "The baptismal formula was changed from the name of Jesus Christ to the words Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by the Catholic Church in the second century."
Hastings Dictionary of the Bible, 1963, page 1015, says, "The Trinity... is not demonstrable by logic or by Scriptural proofs,...The term Trias was first used by Theophilus of Antioch (c AD 180), ...(The term Trinity) is not found in Scripture." Also, on page 88, "It must be acknowledged that the three-fold name of Matthew 28:19, does not appear to be used by the primitive Church, but rather, in the name of Jesus, Jesus Christ, or The Lord Jesus."
Schaff-Herzog Religious Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, page 435, says, "The New Testament knows only the baptism in the name of Jesus."
