While there were many true prophets of God in Bible History (such as Elijah and Elisha), there were also many false prophets who were "inspired" either of themselves, or by Satan. The same holds true for our time, as it will increasingly be ....in the days to come. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
Jeremiah 14:14
Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
Matthew 7:15
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Matthew 24:11
And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:24
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Mark 13:22
For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
Luke 6:26
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
2 Peter 2:1
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
First, a false prophet will not hold to the true doctrine of Christ. He "gives heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils" I Tim 4:1. Second, a false prophet will draw back from the practices of the church and go off on a tangent emphasizing some particular doctrine that is unscriptural. They are dangerous! Dangerous because they prophesy lies in the name of the Lord, and command people to do things God has not commanded. They are dangerous because they are ravenous wolves in their spirit.
1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Lamentations 2:14
Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.
Humans can be, or go, wrong. God's Word will never fail you, because God will never fail you. Don't believe anyone that ignores Gods Word. This is one way we can protect ourselves against false prophets. Never just take someone's word as "gospel," regardless of how educated or exalted they may be, or appear to be. Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are of God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world!
God's TRUE prophets want you to obey God, not them. Follow them only as they follow Christ. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Deceitfulness is a mark of the false prophet. He is not what he appears to be. He comes in the name of Christ, pretending to be a leader of spiritual religion, when in reality he is not. Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. They mix the true APOSTOLIC doctrine with teachings which are not a part of Biblical revelation, and lead people away from TRUTH as a result. Be careful of the religious system that appeals through "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life," for those things are "not of the father, but of the world."
