Is water baptism required for salvation? Yes, I believe Scripture teaches that it is!
Baptism is a visible act with a spiritual meaning. It is a symbol of Christ’s burial and resurrection. Water Baptism is far more than a ritual or religious exercise; and it's a command for us as believers.
Water Baptism is an outward declaration that reflects a personal, inward faith. It associates the true believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and signifies the believer's death to the old life to rise as a new creation in Christ.
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Romans 6:1-8
Romans 6
1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
Water baptism is an act of faith and obedience to the commands of Christ!! Scripture teaches that IF we love Him, we will keep his commandments. Those who accepted his message were baptised... Read Acts 2:41
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” Mark 16:16
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38
Peter included baptism as part of his apostolic preaching...
a. He commanded the people at Pentecost to be baptized - Ac 2:36-38
b. He commanded the household of Cornelius to be baptized - Ac 10:47-48
From the accounts in Acts, we saw that for Peter taught baptism was for the remission of sins - Ac 2:38 As stated in the KJV, "...baptism doth also NOW save us"! Grace is God's part, faith is our part; baptism is an element by which God carries out His plan to save us through the blood of Christ. It is necessary for us to be identified with His death, burial, and resurrection.
We are justified through His blood - Ro 5:9
We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins - Ep 1:7
I believe scripture shows that those baptized into His death can rise to walk in newness of life! Those united together in the likeness of His death (i.e., baptism) can share in the power of His resurrection - Ro 6:5 I believe that the same power of God that raised Jesus from the dead is what saves us in baptism so we can be "made alive" Co 2:12-13
