What Does the Bible Say About
America, 229 Years Later?
Our Hymnal has on page 531, “America trhe Beautiful.” We often sing it around the Fourth of July. The first three verses contain these three lines:
“A-mer-ica! A-mer-ica! God shed his grace on thee.”
“A-mer-ica! A-mer-ica! God mend thine every flaw.”
“A-mer-ica! A-mer-ica! God thy gold refine.”
In hymn number 529, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, the last part of the last verse states, “Long may our Land be Bright with freedom’s holy light; Pro-tect us by thy might, Great God, our King!” Hymn number 528 is the “The Star Spangled Banner.” Listen to the part of the second verse “Praise the Pow’r that made and pre-served us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just; And this be our moto: ‘In God is our trust!’ ”
Proverb 14:34 states, “Righteousness exhalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Psalm 9:17 states, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.” Proverbs 16:12 states, “It is an abomination to kings (Presidents) to commit wickedness, for the throne is established by righteousness.” In 229 years we have come from a God fearing nation to a God forgetting nation.
In 229 years we have come from a nation that was built upon the Word of God, Prayer and righteousness, to a nation of immorality, murder, deceit, and corruption. We have become lazy, lustful, and careless. Our prisons and jails are filled and overflowing. Child abuse is rampant. Abortion is used to remove the unwanted, unloved Fruit of our sin. It writes on hearts in indelible ink guilt that cannot be removed with all the dollars that pay for the mind-altering drugs and the hours of counseling which our government throws at the problem while denying the help that can be found freely in the Word of God! Homes are falling apart because we have shunned God’s Word and made gold our god. We sue instead of serve. We lust instead of love. We yearn instead of yield. We whine instead of work. We take instead of give.
Charles Caroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence said, “Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion whose morality is so sublime and pure…are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.”
Benjamin Franklin speaking at the Constitutional Convention on June 28, 1787 said in part, “I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proof I see of this truth – that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that the empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, sir, in the Sacred Writings, that ‘except the LORD build the House, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this, and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builder of Babel; we shall be divided by our little partial local interest; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.”
229 years later America has arrived! Pray, Pray, Pray!
